UNDER|OVER

SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION, 2023.

‘OVER | UNDER’ is a raw sheep fleece rug handmade by wet felting. The work responds to the importance of sheep grazing in an Irish ecosystem, much like sheep, the process binds the fibres together to create a harmonious material. It is a gesture to sheep to find a balance as an engaged member of Ireland's ecosystem and economy.

POSITIONINGS

PUBLICATION, 2021.

Positionings is a publication of active research. Situated in Laois, the work honours what is present and questions the future of the local, labour and its value through use and production. The three strands speak to each other through ideas of farming ingenuity.

Section 1 - The (Passive) Observer: Sets the context for the experience of the book. It ask us of the existing state of the farm through the lens of the artist.

Section 2 - The (Interactive) Honouring: hints at broader questions of use and production which slowly introduces us to honouring objects. It reflects on farming objects dictated through the production of a ‘one man farm.’ I draw attention to the functionality of farming ingenuity and its materiality speaking to the current economy of farming.

Section 3 - The (Active) Implication: presents the process of A Structure, a collaboration with my father and brother. We re-purposed a marginal space on the farm to an active space for events and talks. A space for action and agency that will organically take on use and functionality beyond this book.

WORK PRESERVED

VIDEO, 4MINS 30SECS, 2019.

Work Preserved reflects on ideas of preservation and craftsmanship focusing on the practice of taxidermy as described through the subjective lens of the family who experience the craft as a normality. Influenced by Max Weber’s idea of rationalisation and how a process is examined. In exploring this topic the transmission of memory is present. Interviews with my father and niece examine changes in perspective about preservation in relation to memories, childhood and biodiversity. The consideration of childlike experiences conveys different connections with people and their surroundings with regard to the craft shifting meanings across generations. It touches on furthering questions such as death, morality and sense of place.
